Murder
There is a difference between culpable homicide, which is defined under Section 299 of IPC, and murder. All murders are culpable homicides, but not all culpable homicides are murders.
Culpable homicide, as per Section 299, means the act done by a person which causes the death of another with an intention of causing death or causing such bodily injury that is likely to cause death, or he has knowledge that the act committed by him is likely to cause death, is said to commit the offence of Culpable homicide.
The difference between culpable homicide and murder lies in the intention. If the intention was to kill the person, then the case comes under Section 300 of IPC, which is murder. If intention is absent, then it comes under Section 299 of IPC, in which it can be culpable homicide not amounting to murder (if the victim is alive) or culpable homicide amounting to murder (if the victim dies).
Attempt to murder
Attempt to murder comes under Section 307 of IPC and it carries many similarities with Section 324, which talks of causing hurt voluntarily using deadly weapons. Many times, it becomes difficult to differentiate the case between Section 307 and Sections 324, 325, and 326, as all the offences under these sections carry common ingredients.

This is defined under Section 304A of IPC. It states that “if someone causes the death of another due to rash or negligent act that does not amount to culpable homicide, shall be punished with imprisonment which can extend up to two years or with fine or both.”
Dowry death is dealt in a separate section of IPC. The section is 304B, which states that “if within seven years of marriage a woman dies by a bodily injury or burns, or it is revealed that before the marriage the woman was exposed to cruelty or harassment by her husband or by any other relative of her husband, in connection to the demand of dowry then the death of the woman will be considered as the dowry death.” Punishment is minimum 7 years of imprisonment and maximum life imprisonment.
